October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is bursting with the colors of fall.  It is the time most of us look forward to seeing, all the bright, beautiful colors.  But among the fiery reds, lush yellows and blazing oranges, the color of pink has become a prominent contender.  October represents a month of increased awareness and fundraising events for research, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and finding a cure.

Everyone knows someone who has been affected by this horrific disease - be it a mother, daughter, wife, sister, aunt, niece, or friend.

There is so much that you can do for yourself, friend family members and even someone you do not know very well, but might be struggling.  Be sure you and your loved ones follow the recommended guidelines form the American Cancer Society for early detection of breast cancer.  If there is a history of breast cancer in your family be sure to consult your doctor earlier and to begin these steps at an earlier age.

Get involved.  Getting involved in the community and activities can help not only yourself, but you might be amazed at what it could do for others.

There are numerous events planned across the country  The Avon Walk for Breast Cancer "In It To End It" is planned for Oct. 15-16 in New York City. Please click on the link to see when and if it will be in a city near you!  Supporters will walk all over the island of Manhattan, completing a total of 40 miles. Local sponsors include Hudson River Park, Groupon, Au Bon Pain, and Seamless.
Other races will take place around the nation, such as the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk.  One of the biggest organizations is Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The Empire State Building will be aglow in pink from Oct. 14-16 to recognize NBCAM. The monument of the Angel of Independence was lit up on Sept. 30 in Mexico City. Other global landmarks will be illuminated as well.

There is also significant endorsement from public figures and companies.
Estee Lauder will be making a $500,000 donation to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. It will be selling the "Pink Ribbon Collection" of jeweled pins, lipsticks, and make-up cases. Beauty Advisors at the store will be handing out pink ribbons to customers all month.

Avon is the leading corporate supporter globally of the breast cancer cause.  The company started its Breast Cancer Crusade in 1992.  Avon has raised and donated nearly $700 million to breast cancer programs around the world.
