Does Bad Hair Mean Bad Health?

Is your hair trying to tell you something about your health? Maybe. Some conditions and medications can affect your body as well as your hair. In other cases, you may just need to take better care of your hair or scalp.


I recently was talking about this to my 7 year old daughter, yes I know it sounds like a mature conversation, but I feel children need to know at any age how important is it to take good care of themselves.  Last year she was struggling with getting her hair clean in the shower.  It made her just not want to shower at all.  We finally got past it and are now dealing with the time issue, but  I would much rather deal with long showers verse a stinky, unclean girl.  Honestly, it never got to that point, but it did remind of that movie with Adam Sandler, Big Daddy.  Nobody wants to be the stinky kid in class.  : )

Luscious Locks Need Nutrients

Could a crash diet cost you your hair? In extreme cases, it could. Premature Gray Hair Is Genetic

Going gray isn't always related to aging. If you're not yet 40 and see more than a few gray hairs, chances are it runs in your family. Gray usually isn't a sign of poor health, though anemia, thyroid issues, vitamin B-12 deficiency, and vitiligo can cause premature graying. You can highlight or color hair to cover the gray, but beware: some people are sensitive to the dye's chemicals. The result could be an itchy, burning scalp.

I started to gray when I was in my early 30's.  It never really bothered me until I colored my hair.  Sound funny?  I colored my hair just for fun I guess.  I am naturally dark brown and I slowly changed the color to black.  Now, for me it is a must to cover up those gray hairs.

My husband had a few gray hair before the age of ten, yes 10.  When we met he was 19 and had just a small strip of gray down his head.  Now at 32 he is fully gray.  I actually love is gray hair and would not change it.  He wants to color it, but I think he looks handsome just as he is!

Cracked, Dry, Itchy Skin...Please Can I Get Some Relief?

Dry, cracked skin looks bad and feels worse. Cold, dry air exacerbates the problem - dry, flaky skin appears on the heels, elbows, fingers or toes. As the first day of Autumn has quickly past the chill in the air is being felt by many of us.  Today I was just noticing my hands were starting to feel a little dry.  Without the treatment of lotion, my hands become extremely dry during the winter months.  I have found relief in Avon's Moisture Therapy Intense Treatment Hand Cream (878-160).  I always make sure I keep some handy in my purse, car and at home.  


As for my feet the one product I will always stand by for my cracked skin is Avon's Foot Works Therapeutic Cracked Heel Relief Cream (192-600) I use this religiously during the winter months and also during the warm months.  It helps sooth and repair you sore cracked skin.  


So, what causes cracked skin?  We understand the elements that cause it such as the cool weather, but what really causes cracked skin?  Anyone can develop hardened, cracked skin, especially in the winter.  Some of us suffer from cracked skin more severally than others.  It can depend on where you live, how you live, what you do and your lifestyle.  


Diabetics often have severely cracked skin. It is estimated that 17 million Americans have either type 1 or type 2 diabetes, and almost 6 million people have the disease but have not been diagnosed. Nobody knows exactly why diabetics are prone to skin cracks, but the problem appears to involve the nervous system. Nerves in the legs and feet do not get the message to keep the skin soft and moist. Once the skin dries out and cracks appear, high blood glucose levels allow bacteria to thrive, making the problem worse.


However, non-diabetics suffer from dry, cracked skin, too. Other factors that can be involved include:

• Prolonged standing, especially on hard floors.
• Obesity or being overweight (this increases the pressure on the normal fat pad under the heel, causing it to expand sideways - if the skin is not supple and flexible, the pressures to 'crack' are high)
• Open backs on shoes (this causes the pad under the heel to expand sideways and 'crack')
• Medical conditions (neuropathy in diabetics limits sweating; an under active thyroid lowers the body's metabolic rate and there is a reduction in sweating, leading to a dryness of the skin)
• Skin conditions (psoriasis and eczema)

What do you do to help with your cracked skin?  There are many ways you can prevent, help sooth and stop the severity of cracked skin.  I always do my best to wear gloves and protect my skin from the harsh cold temperatures.  Every morning I always hydrate my skin with Avon's Moisture Therapy Intensive Treatment Body Lotion (240-666).  I then am always reapplying the lotion to my hands and elbows.  

I am a clean freak and I am always washing my hands.  Washing them in hot water makes cracked hands even worse.  I try to either use hand sanitizer (which can REALLY burn if you have any cuts!  OUCH!!)  or I try to keep the water cool.  Avon has some AWESOME pocket or purse size hand antibacterial gel.  They are $1.49 each and come in 3 different scents.  My favorite is the Naturals Antibacterial Mini Hand Gel in Vanilla (314-433)

Here are some other options for treating cracked skin:  

• Soak cracked skin in tepid water for five minutes.
• Avoid washing with hot water, and avoid strong soaps.
• Cover up. If you are prone to cracked skin on your hands, use rubber gloves while doing the dishes.
• Drink lots of fluids.
• Pamper your feet - wear sports shoes, especially broad-fitting, or those designed for walking. Wear clean, well-fitting, cotton or wool socks.
• Maintain a healthy body weight.

Top 10 Foods for Healthy Hair

When it comes to healthy hair, it’s not just what you put on your hair it’s what you put in your body, too.

"Lather, rinse, repeat" may be standard advice, but shampoo and conditioner alone won't give you the healthy hair you crave. For the most luxurious locks possible, you'll need to step out of the shower, and into the kitchen.

Sound strange coming from a Beauty Consultant who sells Avon?  Everyone knows that you must have a healthy base to start with.  You have to have a healthy YOU before you start with anything.  I always feel act and look better when I eat healthy foods.  It all starts by taking care of yourself.  This requires eating the correct nutritious foods, or at least doing our best. 


Your hair grows about 1/4 to 1/2 inch every month and the foundation of all of our new hair, skin, and nail growth is the nutrients we eat.  If you eat a healthy diet, you will grow stronger and healthier cells throughout your entire body -- inside and out.

Healthy Hair Food No. 1: Salmon


When it comes to foods that pack a beauty punch, it's hard to beat salmon. Loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, this high-quality protein source is also filled with vitamin B-12 and iron.

Essential omega-3 fatty acids are needed to support scalp health.  A deficiency can result in a dry scalp and thus hair, giving it a dull look.

Vegetarian? Include one or two tablespoons of ground flaxseed in your daily diet for some plant-based omega-3 fats.



Healthy Hair Food No. 2: Dark Green Vegetables

Popeye the Sailor Man didn't eat all that spinach for healthy hair, but he could have. Healthy Hair Food No. 4: Nuts


Do you go nuts for thick, shiny hair? You should.

Brazil nuts are one of nature's best sources of selenium, an important mineral for the health of your scalp.

Walnuts contain alpha-linolenic acid, an omega-3 fatty acid that may help condition your hair. They are also a terrific source of zinc, as are cashews, pecans, and almonds. A zinc deficiency can lead to hair shedding, so make sure nuts are a regular on your healthy hair menu.

Nuts are one of my favorite foods.  I bet you love them even more now. 



Healthy Hair Food No. 5: Poultry

Chickens and turkeys may have feathers, but the high-quality protein they provide will help give you the healthy hair you crave.

Without adequate protein or with low-quality protein, one can experience weak brittle hair, while a profound protein deficiency can result in loss of hair color.

Poultry also provides iron with a high degree of bioavailability, meaning your body can easily reap its benefits.



Healthy Hair Food No. 6: Eggs

When it comes to healthy hair, it doesn't matter whether you like your eggs scrambled, fried, or over easy. However they're served up, eggs are one of the best protein sources you can find.

They also contain biotin and vitamin B-12, which are important beauty nutrients.



Healthy Hair Food No. 7: Whole Grains

Sink your teeth into hearty whole grains, including whole-wheat bread and fortified whole-grain breakfast cereals, for a hair-healthy dose of zinc, iron, and B vitamins.

Healthy Hair Food No. 9: Low-Fat Dairy Products

Low-fat dairy products like skim milk and yogurt are great sources of calcium, an important mineral for hair growth. They also contain whey and casein, two high-quality protein sources.

For some healthy hair foods "to-go," try throwing a yogurt or cottage cheese cup in your bag when you head out in the morning to snack on later in the day. You can even boost their hair benefits by stirring in a couple of tablespoons of ground flaxseeds or walnuts for omega-3 fatty acids and zinc.

When it comes to foods for healthy hair and beauty, variety is the best way to go.

An overall balanced diet of lean proteins, fruits, and vegetables, whole grains, legumes, fatty fish like salmon and low-fat dairy will help keep hair healthy.
If you're tempted to drop pounds fast with the latest fad diet, it could leave you with less-than-healthy hair -- along with a growling stomach. Low-calorie diets are often low in some of the most important nutrients for healthy hair, including omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, and vitamin A. In addition to stunting hair growth and leading to dullness, super-low calorie plans may even cause hair loss.

Crash diets can affect the hair cycle.  Losing a significant amount of weight in a short amount of time can affect that normal hair rhythm. Two to three months later, you might notice a significant increase in shedding. This is a temporary problem that you recover from with a well-rounded diet

I have personally had many friends who have tried either a specific diet or crash diets.  They have done amazing with loosing the weight, but in the end the weight always seems to creep back on and the other parts of their body can suffer.  They are tired from lack of nutrition, they feel run down and they just don't look healthy.  It is necessary for our bodies to have a well-rounded diet and not neglect out bodies of certain proteins, fibers or nutrients it needs. 

I can honestly say that in my adult years I feel I eat very healthy.  I did my share of unhealthy habits and practices when I was younger and now I know the risks and how it can be hard on your body.  I am 37 and I have not been on a diet since I was in my 20's.  I am not saying I am the perfect weight or that I couldn't use a little "tightening' but I for personal reasons just do not like dieting.

What Helps You Wake Up In The Morning?

There are just some days when we get plenty of sleep and we still look and feel like we have been out parting all night.  To me I have to wonder if it is just my body getting older?  Many nights I am lucky if I get close to 6 hours of sleep.  I also wonder is the sleep I am getting "good sleep?"  Do you ever wake up after sleeping for 8 hours and just feel exhausted?  What ever it is, no one wants to look exhausted.  Sometimes after a nice shower, several cups a coffee or bodies just want to stay (look) asleep.
